Project Isabela
Bad News
Alien species are the single greatest threat to Galápagos wildlife. The prospects are not encouraging as the number of alien species introduced to Galápagos continues to rise.
The problem of introduced goats is particularly dangerous as they eat almost all the vegetation, thus destroying the habitat.
The famous Galápagos Giant Tortoises are especially at risk and could even face extinction.
Only by controlling the goats and other introduced species can the endemic flora and fauna of the islands be restored.
What is being done?
Project Isabela is the largest and most ambitious programme of habitat restoration ever undertaken.
A holistic approach, involving wildlife experts, scientists and the local community, is being applied.
The project will be a role model for conservationists around the world tackling similar challenges.
How can you help to restore the biodiversity of Northern Isabela?
Provide start up funding for this exciting work which is also attracting substantial support from UNDP's Global Environment Facility, the United Nations Foundation, private foundations and individual donors in many countries.
